Ohio marks National Adoption Month

Governor John Kasich has joined leaders across the country in recognizing November as National Adoption Month, a month set aside to raise awareness about the critical need for permanent homes for children in foster care.

This year, National Adoption Month and its companion, National Adoption Day, focus again on the adoption of older youth currently in foster care: “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family – Just Ask Us.” This theme emphasizes the importance of identifying permanent families for thousands of older teens in foster care who are currently less likely to be adopted, often because of their age, and who all too often age out of the system without a stable place to call home. Children services agencies across the state will be hosting ceremonies and finalizing adoptions to celebrate the month.

In his resolution, Gov. Kasich encourages all Ohioans to join in the observance of National Adoption Month and to continue to open their hearts and homes to children in foster care waiting to be adopted.

According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, in Ohio, 2,446 children are currently in foster care waiting to be adopted. Of those, 1,169 children are 12 years or older. The average amount of time those older youth have spent in foster care is four years and six months. “Securing lifelong connections for older youth, legally and emotionally, is a critical component of their future achievement and overall well-being,” said Dan Shook, the new deputy director at the department’s Office of Families and Children.

National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care across the nation waiting to find permanent, loving families. A coalition of national partners — including Ohio’s own Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, The Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network — sponsor National Adoption Day, which will be Nov. 19 this year.
