PCSAO joins in mourning slain Vermont caseworker
PCSAO and its member agencies join with child welfare officials across the country in extending our condolences to the family of slain Vermont caseworker Lara Sobel and to all child protection professionals in that state mourning her loss this week.
The 14-year veteran social worker was shot and killed outside her office on Friday, allegedly by the mother of a child who had recently been taken into agency custody. The client is also accused of murdering three of her own family members.
The death of a caseworker at the hands of a client while in the line of duty calls to mind the tragic slaying of Franklin County Children Services caseworker Nancy Fitzgivens in 2001. That murder spurred PCSAO to begin collecting and compiling quarterly safety incident reports from agencies.
